Optus
As of November 2002 Optus cable will redistribute the Foxtel subscription service
(therefore offering access to exactly the same channels available on the Foxtel
cable). The Optus Broadband product and service term fairly slightly from Bigpond,
but Optus tends to take the market lead on pricing & download availability/speed.
ADSL
Telstra
Telstra offers broadband internet connection though the existing phone lines.
In general, this product is more expensive than the cable broadband internet
product offered by Optus and Bigpond. It would also require one of the two
lines to each unit to be dedicated to this purpose.
Telephony
Telstra
Telstra has wired the complex for two phone lines per unit, this could be rewired
to include more lines.
Optus
Optus offers direct connection to its local (and long distance) telephony products
through its cable. Currently its local call product is substantial cheaper than anything offered by Telstra.
Service Providers
Both Telstra and Optus are obliged to provide access to their local call infrastructure
to third party companies. These companies can then resell this service to
consumers. Examples of these companies are AAPT & Orange.
The Future
Government
The government has signalled that it is unhappy with the lack of development
and uptake of broadband internet connection in Australia. It has advised that
this is not happening at the same strength as other comparable overseas countries.
It is currently looking at how this element of the communications industry
functions in Australia.
Recommendation
Communications Plan
It is recommended that the owners corporation undertake a study and plan for
the owners perception of the communication
